Hatters Drop 3-1 Decision to Stephen F. Austin

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson took the opening set in extra points, but Stephen F. Austin bounced back for a 3-1 (27-29, 25-14, 25-13, 25-11) victory over the Hatters Saturday night at the Edmunds Center.

Eva Deisa had a match-high 17 kills to lead the Hatters, who fell to 0-3 in the season-opening Stetson Invitational.  Shelby Connors added nine kills and posted a .438 hitting percentage.

Stetson faced three set points in the first frame, but each time Deisa came through with a kill to pull the Hatters even.  With the score tied at 27, Anna Bezhan buried an attack to put Stetson up by one, then Julie Varga and Hao Jin combined on a block up the middle to give the Hatters a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Ladyjacks hit over .430 during the final three sets to pull away.

Naina Ivanova collected 44 assists as the Hatters hit .192 as a team.  Ivanova also led the team with 18 digs.  Chelcie Spence (13), Danielle Sink (10) and Bezhan (10) also reached double figures in digs.  

Stetson averaged nearly 15 digs per set (14.92) during the opening weekend.

The Hatters will return to action next weekend in another home tournament as East Carolina, Providence, and Bucknell visit the Edmunds Center.
