Hatters Fall to East Carolina 3-1

Hao Jin registers seven blocks

DeLand, Fla. -- Despite collecting a season-high 81 digs, Stetson fell to visiting East Carolina 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20) in the Hatter Classic Friday evening at the Edmunds Center.

The Pirates improved to 3-2 on the season while the Hatters fell to 0-4.

Stetson featured three freshmen in the starting line-up, and all three contributed statistically.  Right side hitter Rebecca Ingram tied for the team lead with nine kills, setter Naina Ivanova recorded a team-high 33 assists and 23 digs, and libero Chelcie Spence picked up a season-high 20 digs.

"I think I saw improvement today from where we were last weekend," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "I put a couple more young players in the line-up and I think for freshmen they played very well.

"Even though we lost in four sets, every single game was 20 or above," Deng added. "We had a lot of runs even though we didn't hit that well.  Overall, I am really happy with our progress."

Eva Deisa also recorded nine kills for the Hatters, who hit .108 for the match.

Stetson played very well defensively, topping the 70-dig mark for the third time this season.  Deisa (15 digs) and Charlotte Earnhart (14 digs) joined Ivanova and Spence in double figures.

Middle blocker Hao Jin collected a season-best seven blocks, including two solos.

The Hatters will host Providence at 7 p.m. Saturday.
