Hatters Get Back to Work With Pair of Road Games This Weekend

After being sidelined last weekend due to Hurricane Irma, Stetson women's soccer gets back to business this weekend with a pair of contests in opposite parts of the country. The Hatters visit Grand Canyon, 10 p.m., Friday and Charleston Southern, 2 p.m., Sunday.

Even though she's left the area, Irma's wrath is still impacting the Hatters. Stetson was supposed to visit the Antelopes on Thursday and return home for a match against Ole Miss on Sunday. But travel challenges forced the Grand Canyon contest to be moved back a day, and the match with the Rebels was scrapped due to a variety of reasons. So the Hatters picked up the Buccaneers to fill a hole in the schedule.

When Stetson (4-2-0) takes the field in Phoenix on Friday it will have been 13 days since they last played. The Hatters defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-1 on Sept. 2 at the UTRGV Invitational in Edinburg, Texas.

The Hatters have out-scored their opponents 8-1 during their current three-match winning streak. Senior Sarah Collins leads the team with five goals, while Lindsey Parent and Allison Zaccheo have two each.

Defensively, the Hatters have been outstanding over the season's first six games. Stetson's defense has allowed just five goals and three of their four wins have come via shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Plotz has a 0.73 goals-against average, which ranks second in the ASUN Conference.

Grand Canyon, members of the Western Athletic Conference, are 3-4-1 overall. Charleston Southern is 2-4-0 overall, and the Bucs host Wofford on Friday.

Notes: Stetson and Grand Canyon will be meeting for the first time … the Hatters are 4-4-0 all-time against Charleston Southern … senior Sarah Collins has 33 career goals and needs two more to become Stetson's all-time leader … sophomore Emily Plotz moved into fourth place on Stetson's career list when she earned her eighth career shutout – third of the season -- on Aug. 31 at UTRGV … Arizona natives Riana Metzger (Chandler/Hamilton HS) and Kahri Smith (Fountain Hills/Fountain Hills HS) will play in their home state Friday for the first time as collegians … the Hatters begin ASUN play on Sept. 23 when they host FGCU at 7 p.m.
