Hatters Get Defensive Again, Roll Past USC Upstate

Five different players scored in double figures for Stetson, but the Hatters' defense stole the show for the second time in as many games as Stetson rolled to an 87-69 ASUN Conference victory over visiting USC Upstate, Saturday at Edmunds Center.
 
Two days after holding NJIT to sub-40 percent shooting, the Hatters (10-9, 2-1) were at again on Saturday as they limited the Spartans (5-15, 0-3) to 39 percent shooting for the game.
 
Stetson broke open a tight game midway through the first half. With the scored tied 18-18 at the 10:12 mark, the Hatters used an 11-1 run over the next 4:01 for a 29-19 lead on a Divine Myles 3-pointer with 6:11 left in the half.
 
The first half lead swelled to 16 points before the Hatters settled for a 46-33 advantage at halftime.
 
Stetson continued to pour it on in the second half, leading by as many as 28 points when an Angel Rivera trey gave the Hatters a 67-39 lead with 10:59 to go.
 
The Hatters shot 48 percent from the field for the game, making 14 of 31 from 3-point range. Stetson out-rebounded the Spartans by three (40-37) and had 20 assists on 32 made field goals.
 
B.J. Glasford finished with a game-high 18 points for Stetson. Abayomi Iyiola came off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Myles and Angel Rivera each scored 11. Luke Doyle chipped in with 10 points.
 
Mike Cunningham led Upstate with 16 points.
 
The Hatters conclude their three-game home stand when they host Bethune-Cookman, 4 p.m., Monday.
 
News & Notes
  • The 18-point margin of victory was Stetson's largest against a conference opponent since a 59-39 win over Kennesaw State on Feb. 14, 2009
  • Abayomi Iyiola enjoyed his second double-double (12-11) of the season. His last such effort came in the season opener against Webber International.
  • Divine Myles and Angel Rivera not only combined for 22 points but also totaled 14 assists and just three turnovers.
  • All 14 players in uniform saw action on Saturday
  • Keith Matthews scored a career-high 9 points
  • Stetson is 2-1 in conference play for the first time since 2011-12 campaign
  • The Hatters haven't been over .500 this late in the season since 2012-13
