Hatters Fall on Rivera's Historic Night

Kennesaw State's James Scott and Nick Masterson combined for 60 points to lead the Owls to a 95-81 ASUN Conference win over visiting Stetson, Thursday at the KSU Convocation Center.

The performance of Scott and Masterson overshadowed a milestone night for Stetson's Angel Rivera, who became the Hatters' all-time leader with 527 assists.

Scott and Masterson combined to shoot 21 of 31 for the Owls (5-14, 1-3), including 11 of 16 from 3-point range. Conversely, the Hatters (10-11, 2-2) were 5 of 27 from deep and shot just 42.5 percent for the game.

"Defensively we started out OK but then we made some substitutions and the bottom fell out," head coach Corey Williams said. "Those guys (Scott, Masterson) got some confidence and started making some shots and it snowballed on us."

With the game tied 16-16 with 11:30 to play, Kennesaw State went on 17-9 run and seized a 33-25 advantage. The lead continued to grow until the Owls led 49-36 at halftime.

In the second half the Hatters couldn't catch up. Three times Stetson cut the lead down to nine points, the final time coming when Divine Myles sank a pair of free throws to make it 80-71 with 3:32 to go. But the Owls responded with an 11-2 run over the next 1:40 and the game was out of Stetson's reach.

Myles led the Hatters with 22 points on 10 of 16 shooting. B.J. Glasford added 17 points and Abayomi Iyiola chipped in with 11 off the bench.

Rivera enjoyed one of his best games of the season, finishing with 17 points, six assists, six rebounds and two steals in 32 minutes.

News & Notes
  • Rivera broke Frank Ireland's previous career record of 526 assists.
  • Abayomi Iyiola was the recipient of Rivera's record-breaking pass, scoring a layup with 16:41 left in the second half.
  • Stetson was 14 of 16 from the free throw line, marking the second straight game the Hatters shot better than 80 percent from the stripe.
  • The 15 points scored by Stetson's bench was its fewest in 12 games.

Quoting Coach Williams
"Angel really came out and played well tonight. It shows what an unselfish basketball player he is. People say he's too small, but the one thing he has is a big heart. He's been instrumental in getting a lot of baskets for a lot of different players."
