Hatters Edged at Lipscomb, 85-82

Five different players scored in double figures for Stetson but the Hatters couldn't quite get over the hump in an 85-82 ASUN Conference loss to Lipscomb, Saturday at Allen Arena.

Divine Myles led the Hatters (10-12, 2-3) with 19 points but it wasn't enough to keep Stetson from its third straight loss as three players for the Bisons (12-8, 2-3) scored 20 points each.

The game was a nip-and-tuck affair, one which saw a total of 11 lead changes and 10 ties over 40 minutes.

Myles knotted the game at 39 with a driving layup just before the buzzer at the end of the first half, but Lipscomb became the aggressor early in the second half, opening the final 20 minutes with an 11-2 run for a 50-41 lead with 17:07 to play.

The Hatters, however, regrouped after a timeout and eventually regained the lead when Angel Rivera's layup gave Stetson a 55-54 lead with 12:32 to go.

Lipscomb surged back ahead and took a 65-57 lead before the Hatters again stormed back, briefly regaining the lead on a Myles three-pointer with 5:19 to go. But Stetson's 70-69 advantage didn't last long.

The Bisons followed Myles' big bucket with an 8-0 run. Matt Rose's 3-pointer with 3:11 left made it 77-70, and Stetson was forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

And they nearly did. A jumper by Luke Doyle and two free throws by Rivera made it 77-74, and Rivera brought the Hatters within 81-79 on another layup with 1:07 to go.

Rivera and Lipscomb's Rob Marberry traded free throws to make it 83-81 with 43 seconds to play. Stetson had a chance to tie it when Myles was fouled with 14 seconds to play, but he made just 1 of 2 free throws to cut the deficit to 83-82.

Lipscomb's Kenny Cooper was fouled and made just 1 of 2 free throws, giving Stetson a chance to tie or take the lead but Myles' jumper with nine seconds left was just short and Lipscomb again made a free throw for the final margin.

B.J. Glasford scored 16, Rivera added 14 and Doyle had 12 points for Stetson. Abayomi Iyiola chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

Garrison Matthews, Rose and Marberry each scored 20 points for Lipscomb.

The Hatters visit Jacksonville on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Quoting Coach Williams
"The biggest thing I take away from that game is that we have to learn to finish. But, to our guy's credit, we got down nine, fought our way back and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end."
