Hatters Can't Get Over the Hump at Jacksonville

Stetson's Luke Doyle scored a team-high 16 points but Jacksonville placed three players in double figures as the Dolphins held on for a 76-69 win in ASUN Conference play, Wednesday at JU's Swisher Gym.

Stetson (10-13, 2-4) trailed 36-33 at halftime but the Hatters erased that deficit by opening the second half with a 7-2 run. Stetson took its last lead of the game when Divine Myles converted a three-point play at 17:58 for a 40-38 lead.

The Dolphins (11-12, 5-1) seized control of the game shortly after Myles gave Stetson the lead, scoring the next eight points for a 46-40 lead with 14:57 to go.

JU maintained just a narrow advantage but Stetson couldn't get over the hump. The Dolphins eventually pushed the lead to 10 at 61-51 with 6:02 to go. The Hatters, however, rallied to make a game of it down the stretch.

Two free throws by B.J. Glasford and a jumper by Doyle pulled the Hatters to within 61-55, and Stetson eventually cut the deficit down to 65-62 on a four-point play by Doyle with 2:42 left. But the Hatters never got any closer than that as they made just two field goals the rest of the way.

Doyle finished 6 of 9 from the field and sank three 3-pointers for his best scoring night since early in the season. Leo Goodman finished with 11 points and Angel Rivera chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

J.D. Notae and Devin Harris led the Dolphins with 21 points each, while Jace Hogan had 17.

News & Notes
  • Angel Rivera's 7 rebounds are a season-high
  • Divine Myles was limited to 7 points on 2 of 10 shooting, snapping a streak of 21 consecutive games in double figures
  • Stetson was just 10 of 16 from the free throw line after shooting 87.5 percent from the line in the previous three games

Quoting Coach Williams
"It goes back to stepping up and making plays. When you have an opportunity to win on the road you have to step up and make plays. I thought Jacksonville at the end made more plays than us. We weren't tough enough at the end. That's the part you can't manufacture. We have to take advantage of these next two games at home. Saturday really is a must win. We have to find a way to win that game."

The Hatters host North Florida, 4 p.m., Saturday at Edmunds Center.
