Hatters Open Season With Strong Outing

Box Score Stetson women's tennis opened its spring dual match season with a 5-1 win over Bethune-Cookman, Sunday at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

The Hatters won twice in doubles and took four of the five singles matches. The teams were unable to play a full match as the Wildcats only dressed five players.

Stetson used a lineup on Sunday which featured a total of four freshman playing in their first collegiate matches. Despite the youthful lineup, second-year head coach Travis Sandlant was pleased with his team's overall play.

"Doubles was great today," he said. "We stuck to basics and were successful with our game plans.
It was good to get some match play today and see how we perform under a little pressure. It was all good for the freshman to get the wins under their belts and now we can look forward."

Stetson eased to the doubles point, as the teams of Arijana Korac & freshman Vicky Geurinckx at No. 1 and freshman Brooke Milner & Lucie Renault at No. 2 each earned 6-2 wins.

Renault started the Hatters off on the right foot in singles play, gaining a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4. Korac gave Stetson a 3-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2.

Bethune-Cookman got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 2 before Geurinckx clinched the match for the Hatters with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 3.

Freshman Maxine Bateman finished off the positive day for the Hatters with a 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 5.

The Hatters next visit Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
