Hatters Finish Strong at Hummingbird Intercollegiate

Sapphire, NC – The Stetson men's golf team posted its best team round of the year on Tuesday in the final round of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
 
The Hatters, led by a five-under par 66 from junior Chris Williard, posted a four-under par team score of 280 to finish 13th in the 15-team field. The 280 was the fifth best team score of the day and was tied for the 10th best team round of the tournament, which was hosted by Western Carolina University.
 
Georgia Southern, which posted a tournament record 272 in the second round on Monday, matched that number in the final round to win the team title by 13 shots over second place Morehead State. It was the Eagles, however, who posted the low round of the event with a 271 in the final round. All five players for MSU shot a 69 or better on Tuesday.
 
Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk charged to the top of the field on Tuesday with his final round 66 to edge past teammate Brandon Smith, Chattanooga's Oliver Simonsen and Clemson's Kyle Cottam for medalist honors. Fisk finished with a 10-under par total of 203 to take top individual honors.
 
Georgia Southern's Mason Williams finished three shots off the lead after posting a bogey-free final round score of 65, with was the best individual round in the event.
 
Williard was the top finisher for Stetson for the second straight event. The junior had six birdies and one bogey in his final round to move up 22 spots to tie for 14th in the event. His four-under par 209 total included 12 birdies and eight bogeys.
 
Senior Baylor Payne had one bad hole on Tuesday, a triple on the 18th hole, that cost him several spots in the standings. Payne finished the day with an even par 71 that included six birdies. His overall score of one-over 214 included an opening round 67 that featured four birdies and an eagle. Payne finished tied for 33rd overall.
 
Senior Tate Smith made an 11-spot move up the leaderboard on Tuesday thanks to a one-under par 70 that also included six birdies. He finished the tournament with a seven-over par 220 in a tie for 58th place.
 
Freshman Carson Tewell finished tied for 74th in the tournament with a 12-over 225. Senior Jake Ludwick struggled throughout the event, finishing 84th with a 34-over par score of 247.
 
The Hatters will close out their fall season at the North Alabama Invitational from October 14-16 in Killen, Ala.
