Hatters Sweep UNF to Clinch ASUN Tournament Berth

Stetson hits .400 as a team

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson had a dominating night on offense, hitting .400 as a team, en route to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) victory over UNF Tuesday evening at the Edmunds Center.

With the win, the Hatters (14-10, 6-6 ASUN) clinched a berth in the ASUN Championship for the first time since 2015.

"That was one of our goals this year and the girls feel good about that," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "From the beginning of the season, we wanted to make sure we did everything we could to get into the tournament."

Stetson did not hit below .350 in any set and only committed seven errors the entire match.  The .400 attack percentage was a program record for conference play.

"I think having Emily (DeStaffino) back and people getting used to her sets is helping a lot," Deng said. "Her consistency is there as long as we have a pretty decent pass.  She also does a good job of distributing balls in different positions, which makes it hard on the blockers and it puts attackers in the best position to put the ball away."

Julie Varga recorded a 12-kill, 11-dig double double to lead the team.  She hit .438, which was only the third-highest total on the night.  Riley Nieporte hit .545 (7-1-11) and Hao Jin hit .538 (8-1-13).  DeSteffino finished with 35 assists.

Gabby O'Connell had 12 kills to lead the Ospreys (9-21, 4-10).

The Hatters will play their final two ASUN road matches of the season this weekend as they visit North Alabama and NJIT.

Notes: Julie Varga has two career double-doubles, both coming against UNF ... Eva Deisa, Riley Nieporte and Emily DeStaffino each had solo blocks for the Hatters ... The last time Stetson hit .400 or better in a match was in 2011 vs. Savannah State ... The Hatters improved to 7-2 at home and 8-2 when winning the first set ... Stetson swept an ASUN opponent for the first time since 2015 ... The Hatters have had winning records in all three months this season.
