Hatters Hold Off UNA For Third Straight Win

Varga, Schmid With Career-Best Outings

Florence, Ala. -- Julie Varga had a career-high 14 kills and Brianna Schmid hit at a .550 clip as Stetson defeated North Alabama 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 19-21, 25-21) Friday evening at Flowers Hall.

The Hatters (15-10) won their third match in a row and improved to 7-6 in ASUN play.

Unlike the last two matches in which Stetson hit a blistering .351 combined, it was a strong defensive effort Friday that helped the Hatters secure the win.

Stetson picked up 92 digs as a team, led by Chelcie Spence's 26.  Eva Deisa (20), Varga (13) and Naina Ivanova (11) also reached double figures in digs.  At the net, the Hatters registered a total of seven blocks.

After easing their way to wins in the first two sets, the Hatters had to fight off a scrappy Lions team down the stretch.  UNA won the third set 25-19 and battled Stetson down to the wire in Set 4.  With the Hatters leading by just one at 22-21, Deisa dropped in a kill forcing the Lions to call timeout.  After the short break, it was Deisa stepping up once again, this time with a solo block, to give Stetson match point.  Schmid immediately followed with the game-winning ace to nail down the victory.

Stetson hit .239 for the match, finishing strong with a .314 mark in the fourth set.  Schmid totaled 11 kills in 20 attempts without committing an error.  Her .550 attack percentage was a career-high, as was her five digs and three aces.

Varga also served a career-best three aces to go along with her 14-kill, 13-dig double double.  Deisa tallied 11 kills, 20 digs, and two blocks.  Riley Nieporte had nine kills and Emily DeStaffino registered 44 assists.

Hao Jin took most of the match off, but did play the final two points.

Madison Ruble had 17 kills to lead UNA (2-20, 0-13 ASUN).

The Hatters will go for their fourth win in a row at NJIT Sunday.

Notes: Stetson has hit the 15-win mark for just the fourth time since 1992 ... The Hatters have clinched their first winning season since 2014 ... Stetson can finish no worse than fifth but can still climb to fourth in the ASUN standings ... Chelcie Spence moved to fifth on the single-season digs list with 441.  She is 68 digs shy of Monique Russell's record of 509 (2012) ... Spence hit the 20-dig mark for the 11th time this season.  Deisa reached 20 digs for the third time ... Julie Varga has two straight double-doubles.
