Offensive Outburst Leads Hatters Past NJIT

Stetson women's soccer scored early and late as the Hatters pulled out a stunning 4-2 win over ASUN Conference co-leader NJIT, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.

The Hatters (4-8-3, 1-4-1) kept their postseason hopes alive with the win. With just two games remaining, Stetson likely needs to win both and get some help to qualify for the ASUN Tournament.

The win was also the 100th career coaching victory for Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry.

But on Sunday, the Hatters sent their seniors off with a victory with an unexpected offensive surge. After going four straight games without a goal, Stetson exploded on Sunday.

Freshman Nicole Foley gave the Hatters an early 1-0 lead when her free kick from 22 yards went over the head of NJIT goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman and into the net less than three minutes into the match for Foley's first goal of the season.

Hailey Williams, who along with Erin Avers and Emily Miller was honored in pregame ceremonies, gave Stetson a 2-0 lead in the 10th minute when she dribbled through the defense at midfield and fired a missile from 25 yards out and into the goal.

Stetson kept pouring it on as freshman Jordan Ross's header was true on a perfect cross from Lindsey Parent in the 17th minute, giving Stetson a 3-0 advantage. Williams was also credited with an assist.

Comfortably ahead at halftime, the Hatters had to wait out a lightning delay before the start of the second half. The break seemed to energize NJIT (10-4-1, 4-2-0) as the Highlanders opened the second half as the aggressor.

That surge paid off when Tara Walenczyk finally put the Highlanders on the board in the 63rd minute. Down 3-1, NJIT pulled to within a goal when Fiona Wright converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute.

Stetson got some breathing room late in the game when Parent broke free at midfield and out-ran the NJIT defense, scoring her fourth goal of the season in the 86th minute as Stetson's lead grew to 4-2.

Parent's goal was set up after an NJIT corner kick was cleared to just shy of midfield. Parent collected the ball and out-ran the only defender on NJIT's side of the field.

NJIT out-shot Stetson, 18-10, but the Hatters converted more of their chances. Stetson keeper Emily Plotz kept the Hatters in front by making seven saves.

The Hatters next visit Liberty, Sunday, Oct. 14, in Lynchburg, Va.
