FGCU Holds Off Hatters

Chelcie Spence Sets School 3-Set Digs Record

Fort Myers, Fla. -- In a hard-fought defensive battle that featured 18 total blocks and 143 combined digs, FGCU defeated Stetson 3-0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-21) Tuesday night at Alico Arena.

Chelcie Spence recorded a career-high 27 digs for the Hatters (12-7, 4-3 ASUN), who had their three-game win streak snapped.

Anna Bezhan led the offense with 11 kills, adding two solo blocks and one block assist.  Julie Varga added seven kills while Brianna Schmid hit .455.

Spence set a new school rally-scoring-era record for most digs in a three-set match, surpassing the old mark of 24 by Karla Readshaw in 2006.  The Hatters picked up 71 digs as a team and staved off a total of six set points over the final two sets.

Stetson also welcomed back setter Emily DeStaffino, who had been out with an injury since Aug. 31.  DeStaffino recorded three kills and 23 assists.

The Eagles (13-6, 6-1) hit .203 for the match and received 11 kills each from Daniele Serrano and Cortney Vanliew.  Stetson hit .093.

Next, the Hatters will look to get back in the win column as they visit Liberty at noon on Sunday.
