Hatters Upset FGCU to Reach ASUN Title Game

Braeden Luna's save in the penalty kick phase lifted sixth-seeded Stetson to a victory over second-seeded FGCU in ASUN Tournament semifinals, Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Hatters won the PK round, 5-4, though the game technically ended in a 1-1 draw. A marathon affair, the match featured a nearly 3-hour weather delay at the start of the second overtime but the Hatters (7-9-2) persevered to reach the conference championship game for the first time in eight seasons.

Luna, who made six saves during 110 regulation minutes, stopped a shot by FGCU's Joao Burti to seal the victory. The Hatters made five-of-six penalty kick attempts, missing only once during the initial round. Freshman Guilherme Pinheiro scored what would be the eventual winning goal just moments before Luna's save.

Stetson and FGCU played an epic match, with neither team ever really gaining much of an advantage. The two teams nearly went to entire first half without scoring until FGCU's Ryan Medilah tapped in a cross from Burti with 39 seconds left before halftime.

FGCU's 1-0 lead kept the Eagles in front until Stetson freshman Lewis Scattergood put the Hatters on the board in the 73rd minute. Scattergood scored his third goal of the tournament off a corner kick from Nathan Monsanto, heading a shot past FGCU keeper Gustavo Vasconselos.

The game remained tied through regulation and two overtime periods. In the penalty kick phase, the Hatters had successful PKs by Daniel O'Brien, Scattergood, Raphael Northoff, Sebastian Chalbaud and Pinheiro.

FGCU out-shot Stetson, 17-11, but put just one more shot on-goal than the Hatters (7-6). Vasconselos made five saves.

Stetson next face top-seeded Lipscomb in the ASUN Championship Game, Saturday, Nov. 10, in Nashville, Tenn.
