Hatters See Win Streak Snapped

FGCU's Courtney Van Liew and Snowy Burnam combined for 38 kills as the ASUN Conference-leading Eagles held of Stetson for a 3-1 win, Tuesday at Edmunds Center.

The Eagles (23-6 overall, 14-1 ASUN) won the match 21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, snapping Stetson's four-game winning streak.

"Against a good team like this we have to perform consistently and the margin of error is very small," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said. "So if you make a mistake here or there, it's going to go in the other team's favor. Overall, they are a little more experienced in how they play together. I think we did well. I'm proud of how we fought."

After winning the first set, Stetson appeared poised to take a commanding 2-0 lead as the Hatters owned a 20-16 advantage. But FGCU rallied to win nine of the final 12 points to even the match, and took control over the next two sets to win the match.

Overall, FGCU hit a stout .333 as team, while Stetson hit .261. Riley Nieporte and Julie Varga led the Hatters with 13 kills each, and Eva Deisa added 12. Chelcie Spence led Stetson with 22 digs, while Deisa chipped in with 15.
