Hatters Ease Past D-II No. 1 Lynn

Box Score Stetson women's tennis earned an impressive victory on Saturday when the Hatters downed Division II No.1-ranked Lynn, 7-2, in Boca Raton.

The Hatters (2-1) won two of three doubles matches and captured five of six singles matches in the decisive victory.

"It was a solid win today," head coach Travis Sandlant said. "Lynn is definitely as good as their national ranking says they are. The girls need credit for how tough they were today at the big moments in their matches. The scores really don't reflect how much of a battle it was today. It was one of the best wins I have been involved in."

Stetson opened play by gaining two points in doubles (all doubles matches are scored individually in Division II). The No. 2 team of Brooke Milner & Lucie Renault won, 8-1, and the No. 3 team of Danel Ashirova & Maxine Bateman were 8-6 winners.

In singles, the Hatters won matches 2 through 6. Leading 2-1 on the scoreboard after doubles play, the Hatters picked up their first singles victory when Vicky Geurinckx earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3. Ashirova followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2, and Renault clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4.

Bateman picked up a 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 6, and Milner closed the match with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-8 (ret.) victory at No. 5.

The Hatters continue play when they visit Florida A&M, 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 in Tallahassee.
