Hatters Complete Weekend Sweep

Tavares, Fla. -- The 15th-ranked Stetson beach volleyball team picked up two more wins Saturday, defeating No. 20 FAU 4-1 and Houston Baptist 3-2 at the Hickory Point Lake Bash in Tavares, Fla.

Coupled with victories over UNCW and New Mexico on Friday, the Hatters (10-5 overall) went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend and extended their winning streak to seven.

"It was a great job by the entire team," Stetson head coach Kristina Hernandez said.  "I feel like our 4s and 5s are really starting to play well for us and getting those first two points.  FAU was a really strong match for us.  We played really aggressively and stuck to the game plan.  That was a good win for us in the Eastern Region."

The Hatters' two lower seeds helped set the tone, winning all eight matches on the weekend.  At the 4 seed, Julie Varga and Lauren Durham won all four sets Saturday, defeating FAU 21-15, 21-15 and HBU 21-10, 21-16.

At the 5 seed, Quinci Birker and Rebecca Ingram rallied for a 20-22, 21-18, 15-11 win against FAU before posting a 21-12, 21-12 victory vs. HBU.

Those results gave Stetson 2-0 leads in each match before the higher seeds took the court.

Against FAU, the Owls (7-8) picked up a 2-0 win at the 3 seed, but Darby Dunn and Sammee Thomas clinched the match at the 2 seed with a 21-12, 21-17 victory.

At the 1 seed, Carly Perales and Sunniva Helland-Hansen dropped the first set 22-20, but fought back with 21-12 and 15-10 wins in sets 2 and 3 to give Stetson a 4-1 win.

Against Houston Baptist (7-8), the Huskies made it 2-1 with a win at the 2 seed.  However, Samantha Harris and Rachel Noble secured the team victory with a 21-14, 17-21, 15-5 win at the 3 seed.

For the second straight match, Perales and Helland-Hansen dropped the first set 22-20 before winning second set 21-12.  The Hatters' 1 seed found themselves down 8-3 in the third set, but dug in and chipped away at the lead, battling back to within 13-10 at one point.  The Huskies, however, won the final two points to hold on for a 2-1 win on court 1.

The Hatters will travel to LSU next weekend for the Tiger Beach Challenge on Saturday and Sunday.
