Hatters Fight Past Mercer, 4-2

Box Score Stetson women's tennis turned in an impressive performance on Sunday with a 4-2 win over Mercer at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant was pleased with his team's performance and their ability to battle.

"Mercer has a bunch of fighters out there and that what we want to do is be a team that fights like they do," Sandlant said. "We're really young and we have a lot to learn in that area, but I think we actually stepped up today. We may not be 100 percent healthy, and we can make all the excuses in the world that we should have done better, but at the end of the day we got the job done."

Stetson (7-2) opened play by winning the doubles point. The No. 2team of Lucie Renault & Brooke Milner won, 6-3, and the No. 1 tandem of Danel Ashirova & Vicky Geurinckx gave Stetson a 1-0 lead with a 6-2 win.

Singles play began with Mercer (5-5) getting a win at No. 1 after Ashirova retired in the second set. Maxine Bateman (6-3, 6-2) and Danielle Peele (6-1, 6-4) each earned a win at Nos. 5 & 6, respectively, to give Stetson a 3-1 lead.

Mercer closed to within 3-2 with a win at No. 2, but Brooke Milner clinched the match for the Hatters with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 3.

The Hatters have a quick turnaround for their next match as they host Louisiana Tech, 10 a.m., Monday.
