Stetson baseball opens a week-long road trip with two games in Tallahassee against Florida State on Tuesday and Wednesday before venturing up the eastern seaboard to New Jersey for a three-game ASUN series against NJIT this weekend.
Â
Both games at Florida State will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra online and on the Watch ESPN app with Jason Leturmy and Chip Baker on the call of the games. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. Wednesday second game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
Â
The Seminoles will return the visit next week when the Hatters host them on Tuesday, April 24, in a game scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Melching Field.
Â
Stetson (28-8) comes into the week having won its last four games, allowing just five total runs, four earned, in those games while posting a total of 50 strikeouts and with just five walks.
Â
Florida State (24-12) comes into the series having lost five consecutive games, the longest losing streak for the Seminoles since the 2015 season. FSU has not lost as many as six consecutive games since the 1999 season when they lost six in a row (5 to Miami and one to Georgia Tech). That is the only six-game losing streak in FSU Baseball history, going back to 1948.
Â
The Hatters go into Tallahassee having lost 13 consecutive games to the Seminoles overall, which is the longest streak in the history of the series. The last Stetson win over FSU came in DeLand during the 2012 season. The Hatters knocked off the then No. 1 ranked team in the country 6-5 that night.
Â
Stetson's last win in Tallahassee came in 2011, an 11-inning, 6-4 win. FSU owns a 39-11 overall record against Stetson in the capital city.
Â
There is a two-game discrepancy in the all-time series record between Stetson and the Seminoles. The FSU record book shows the program starting in 1948, but Stetson records show two games during the 1904 season between the Hatters and "Florida State College", with one of those games in Tallahassee. The teams split the two games in 1904, with both winning 3-2 on their home field.
Â
Stetson coach
Steve Trimper is 0-7 in his career against FSU. Two of those games were played last year, and the others were during the 2011 and 2012 seasons during Trimper's time at the University of Maine.
Â
Junior
Joey Gonzalez (6-2, 1.49) is scheduled to make the start for Stetson on Tuesday. Gonzalez has been the Hatters' starter in three of the teams' eight shutouts this year. He has made three career appearances against FSU, including a start during his freshman season. He has worked a total of 5.1 innings against the Seminoles, allowing eight runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Â
Gonzalez will be opposed on Tuesday by FSU's regular Sunday starter after the Seminoles had their series finale against Duke rained out on Sunday. Junior right-hander Andrew Karp (5-3, 3.19) made his last start against top-ranked Florida last week, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits over four innings of work, taking the loss in a 6-3 Gators win.
Â
Karp made a start against Stetson as a freshman in 2016. He worked five innings in that game, allowing a run on three hits, earning his first collegiate win in an 8-6 Seminoles victory.
Â
The Hatters have not yet decided on a starter for Wednesday, but the Seminoles are expected to send freshman left-hander Austin Pollack (2-3, 5.49) to the mound. Pollock last started on April 8 at Georgia Tech, allowing four runs on five hits and five walks in four innings of work. He pitched in relief last Friday against Duke, allowing three runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Â
