Hatters Come Up Short in ASUN Final

Playing their third match in three days, Stetson women's tennis ran out of time as North Florida downed the Hatters, 4-1, in the ASUN Conference championship match, Sunday at UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville.

Participating in the final for the first time since 2014, the No. 4 seed Hatters couldn't hang on against the No. 2 seeded Ospreys. Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant was proud of his young team nonetheless.

"Congratulations to UNF," Sandlant said. "It was a highly competitive match today. We gave it everything we had. We can be proud of how far we have come this year. We will be looking to go one step better next year."

UNF opened play by winning the doubles point, with wins at No. 3 and No.1. Stetson's No. 2 duo of Vicky Geurinckx & Arijana Korac earned a 6-1 win but it wasn't enough.

The Ospreys won the first two singles matches for a 3-0 lead, but the Hatters battled back when freshman Danel Ashirova captured a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 to get the Hatters on the board.

The remaining three singles matches stretched into the third set before UNF clinched the championship with a win at No. 6.
