Stetson junior right-handed pitcher
Logan Gilbert moved into rarified territory on Monday when he was selected as the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time in his career.
Â
Gilbert is the first Stetson hurler, and just the 10
th player in ASUN history, to capture the weekly pitching honor for a fourth time. The league record for Pitcher of the Week honors is six times, shared by Brady Puckett of Lipscomb and Chris Sale of Florida Gulf Coast.
Â
It is the second time this season for Gilbert to be named Pitcher of the Week. He also earned the honor back on March 5 for his outing against Virginia Tech. It is the fifth time this season, in 10 weeks of play, for a Stetson pitcher to win the award. Sophomore
Mitchell Senger has been named Pitcher of the Week three times this year.
Â
Gilbert turned in his most dominant performance of the season on Friday in a 9-1 series opening win over NJIT. He retired the first 14 batters he faced, striking out 11, before a two-out triple just inside the right field line broke up his perfect game.
Â
Gilbert allowed another hit in the sixth inning before retiring the next nine straight to finish his eight innings of work. He struck out the last two hitters to finish with a season-high 14 on the night.
Â
With his 14 strikeouts, Gilbert moved into seventh on the Stetson career list with 251. He has surpassed the 100-strikeout plateau for the season, the second straight year he has hit that mark. He joins with Williard Brown (1992-93) and Lenny DiNardo (2000-01) as the third pitcher in Stetson history with back-to-back seasons of 100 or more strikeouts.
Â
Gilbert is now just 32 strikeouts from breaking DiNardo's school record for strikeouts in a season, which he set in 2000 with 132.
Â
The Hatters will be at home on Tuesday afternoon for a single game against Florida State at 5 p.m. Gilbert will make his next start on Friday in Jacksonville when Stetson opens an ASUN series at North Florida.
