Jacksonville, Fla. – After watching a 3-0 lead evaporate in the seventh inning on Friday night's ASUN Conference series opener at Harmon Stadium, the Hatters let their feet do the work to take a 4-3 extra-innings win over North Florida.
Junior
Jacob Koos was hitless in four at bats before he led off the 11
th inning with a single. As UNF reliever Vrad Deppermann (0-3) worked his way to consecutive outs, Koos was running the bases, stealing both second and third base.
When
Andrew MacNeil hit a high chopper over the mound, Koos was able to score the go-ahead run as MacNeil hustled down the line for an infield single.
Senior closer
Brooks Wilson, who's two-run single in the first inning and solo homer in the sixth had given Stetson a 3-0 lead, was able to get out of trouble in the bottom of the inning after allowing consecutive one-out singles by striking out Blake Voyles to end the game.
Stetson improved to 32-11 overall and 7-3 in ASUN play with the win, the fifth straight over the Ospreys. UNF fell to 19-20 on the year and to 4-6 in league play.
Wilson (4-0) worked two innings on the mound to get the win, striking out four in the process, leaving him just four Ks shy of 300 in his career.
After Stetson scored a pair of unearned runs in the opening inning off UNF starter Frank German, the Hatters struggled to string together hits to add to the lead.
Eric Foggo had a two-out double in the fourth, but was stranded.
Baylen Sparks had a two-out single in the fifth, but was left on base. Spooner had a two-out triple in the seventh, but was unable to score.
While the Hatters were battling to try to add to the lead against German, Stetson starter
Logan Gilbert was on cruise control. After walking the second hitter of the game, Gilbert retired 17 straight Ospreys, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh.
UNF picked up its first hit, a bunt single by Dalton Board, leading off the seventh. Tanner Murphy followed with a single to left and Voyles broke up the shutout with a two-run to right center. Jay Prather followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3-3.
After a sacrifice bunt moved Prather into scoring position, the Hatters got out of the seventh on a strikeout-throw out double play as
Austin Hale gunned down the UNF second baseman trying to take third.
Gilbert allowed just those four hits over eight innings of work, allowing just one walk with eight strikeouts. Senior
Ben Onyshko worked a scoreless ninth to force extra innings before turning the game over to Wilson.
German went nine innings for the Ospreys, allowing just the one earned run on five hits with eight strikeouts.
Wilson was the only Hatter with more than one hit in the game while Board and Murphy had two each for the Ospreys.
The teams will square off again on Saturday at 2 p.m. with junior
Jack Perkins (6-2, 3.34) scheduled to pitch for the Hatters against UNF junior left-hander Austin Drury (3-1, 5.01). The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
