Hatters Blank FIU for Season-Opening Victory

Lily Truong and Greta Watkins each scored first-half goals to lead Stetson women's soccer to a 2-0 win over FIU, Friday at FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami.
 
The win is Stetson's first against FIU in Miami since 1996, and just the sixth overall for the Hatters in 23 meetings between the former conference rivals.
 
"I thought we did a really good job of pressing their backs and causing a lot of turnovers, especially in the first half," head coach Manoj Khettry said. "I think anytime you get a road win, and a shutout, and score multiple goals, it's a great thing."
 
Truong got the Hatters on the board first. The freshman scored on a header in the 25th minute as Erin Avers was credited with the assist.
 
Watkins gave the Hatters a 2-0 lead when she scored on a scrum following a corner kick in the 29th minutes. Marisa Maynes had the assist.
 
From there, the defense took control. The Hatters limited the Panthers to just one shot in the first 45 minutes, and junior goalkeeper Emily Plotz made five saves overall in recoding her 12th career shutout.
 
The Hatters have a quick turnaround as they come home to host Towson, 1 p.m., Sunday at the Athletic Training Center.
