Late Rally Lifts Hatters To 3-1 Win in Season Opener

Eva Deisa records a career-high 21 kills

Miami, Fla. -- A 4-0 rally late in the fourth set helped Stetson finish off a season-opening 3-1 win (25-22, 23-25, 25-12, 25-23) over Tennessee State Friday morning at the FIU Kickoff.

Eva Deisa led the way with a career-high 21 kills as the Hatters won their opener for the first time since 2015.

"It was really good to have a 'W' today," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "I really liked how we competed, especially at the end.  We started to learn to play together.  Those last five points might have been the best I have seen, not because we won, but because the way we competed emotionally and physically.  That gives a lot of credit to the entire team."

Stetson (1-0) led 2-1 in the match but trailed 22-19 in the fourth set.  Riley Nieporte struck for three of the next four points, pulling Stetson to within one at 23-22.  After a TSU ball handling error, Deisa gave the Hatters the lead with a kill from the left side.  That set up an epic 45-second match-point rally, capped off by Rebecca Ingram's game-winning tip shot from the right side.

"Rebecca plays beach and has all those skills she learned from roll shots, tips, and knowing the spot," Deng said.  "It happened at a critical time, and Rebecca did her job, so it was excellent."

Deisa, playing her first match since October of last season, added 15 digs to record her 10th career double-double.  Naina Ivanova tallied her 14th double-double with a 35-assist, 10-dig performance.  Chelcie Spence led the defense with 22 digs.

Three Hatters made their Stetson debuts Friday.  After missing the entire 2017 season due to injury, junior middle blocker Brianna Schmid tallied six kills and two blocks while hitting at a .294 clip.  Freshmen Lindsey Leipold and Alejandra Perez each picked up nine digs in their first collegiate match.

Offensively, Stetson hit .481 (13-0-27) in the third set and .208 for the match.  Tennessee State (0-1) hit .192.

The Hatters will return to action at the FIU Kickoff Saturday with a noon contest against Florida A&M and a 4 p.m. match against FIU.

Notes: The win was Stetson's first since Oct. 7 of last season, snapping a nine-game skid ... Spence topped the 20-dig mark for the eighth time in her career ... Stetson picked up 81 digs as a team ... The Hatters have won four of their last six season openers ... Stetson is now 1-1 all-time vs. Tennessee State.
