Hatters Fall in Five-Set Heartbreaker

Brianna Schmid records career-high nine blocks

Murfreesboro, Tenn. -- Despite serving for the match six times during the fourth set, Stetson could not get the final point it needed as Troy claimed a 3-2 victory (24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 33-31, 15-11) Friday afternoon in the opening match of the MTSU Blue Raider Bash.

The setback was Stetson's first of the season and spoiled a chance at the team's first 4-0 start in school history.

The Hatters (3-1) led 1-0 and 2-1, but Troy rallied back twice, fending off six match points in a wild 33-31 Set 4 win.

In the decisive fifth set, the Trojans (3-1) led 8-1 at the changeover, but this time the Hatters stormed back, cutting the lead all the way down to 13-11 at one point.  Troy notched the final two markers, however, to come away with the victory.

Eva Deisa led the Hatters with 13 kills, while Charlotte Earnhart recorded 12 kills and nine digs in four sets off the bench.  Hao Jin notched 11 kills and Julie Varga added nine.

Stetson's middle blockers each had strong performances at the net.  Brianna Schmid recorded a career-high nine blocks, including two solos, and Jin collected one solo and five assists for a total of six blocks.

As a team, the Hatters recorded 16 blocks, tying for the second-highest single-match total in the rally scoring era.

Also for Stetson, libero Chelcie Spence recorded 25 digs, one shy of her career-high, while Emily DeStaffino (24) and Naina Ivanova (18) combined for 42 assists.

The Hatters will return to the court Saturday to face Austin Peay State at 11 a.m. ET and MTSU at 8 p.m. ET.
