Hatters Fall to Knights

UCF's Stefanie Sanders scored a hat trick as the Knights downed Stetson, 5-1, Sunday at the Athletic Training Center in Deland.

This was the final non-conference game of the season for the Hatters (3-4-2). ASUN Conference play begins with a pair of games next weekend.

"UCF is a good attacking team with good attacking players," Stetson head coach Manoj Khettry said. "That's an NCAA-caliber team, and if you're going to have a chance against a team like that you have to defend collectively. We just weren't at our best and you need to be at your best in a game like this."

Though Sanders was the scoring star, Zandy Soree started the scoring for the Knights (3-3-1) just over three minutes into the game with a penalty kick.

Down 1-0 early, the Hatters quickly evened the score. Lindsey Parent broke free of the defense and chipped a shot over charging UCF keeper Vera Varis, who took off after the ball but was unable to chase it down. Nicole Foley assisted on the score as Stetson tied the game at 1-1.

From that point forward it was all UCF. Sanders scored her first goal in the 35th minute to give the Knights a 2-1 lead entering the break, and she quickly made it 3-1 with a score in the 49th minute.

Kristen Scott gave UCF a 4-1 lead in the 58th minute, and Sanders finished off the hat trick with a score in the 87th minute.

The Knights out-shot the Hatters by a 28-2 margin. Stetson keeper Emily Plotz made nine saves.

The Hatters next face North Florida, 7 p.m., Friday in Jacksonville.
