Hatters Down Jacksonville 3-1 in ASUN Opener

Deisa, Ivanova each record double doubles

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson shook off a slow start to surge past visiting Jacksonville 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-18) Tuesday night in the ASUN opener for both teams at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (9-4, 1-0 ASUN) won their third match in a row and are 1-0 in conference play for the first time since 2013.

Rebecca Ingram recorded 11 kills and hit .455 over the final three sets to help spark the offense.

"It was not our best performance, but I will take a win," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "At the same time, it tells us we have to work on some specific skills to clean up our offense.  It was really good to see people coming in off the bench and performing.  Becca has worked on her arm swing in practice, and her hitting showed up tonight. That was big."

For the ninth time in 13 matches this season, the Hatters were locked in a 1-1 tie at the break.  The third set proved to be the turning point, as Stetson rallied from a 20-16 deficit to win the frame 25-23.

Stetson, which hit .389 in the third set and .234 for the match, went on to win the fourth set 25-18.

"Last year, we probably would have folded," Deng said.  "This year, when I get on them, tell them they need to perform a little better and think a little bit more, they are able to respond.  That is a really good improvement."

Anna Bezhan also provided a spark off the bench, collecting seven kills and nine digs.

Eva Deisa tallied a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.  Brianna Schmid contributed seven kills, six blocks and a .429 percentage.

Naina Ivanova posted her ninth double-double with 43 assists and 18 digs.  Chelcie Spence added 14 digs to the defensive effort.

Mallory Mattingly led the Dolphins (1-12, 0-1) with 20 kills.

After playing four matches in five days, Stetson will enjoy a 10-day break before continuing ASUN play at Kennesaw State and Lipscomb on Sept. 28-29.

Notes: The Hatters are off to their best start since 1996 ... Stetson has six come-from-behind wins this season ... The Hatters are just 11-15 in Sets 1 and 2 this season, but they are 20-9 in sets after the break.
