Hatters Down UNF in ASUN Slugfest

DeLand, Fla. -- Senior Eva Deisa tallied a season-high 21 kills including the game-winner as Stetson claimed a much-needed 3-1 victory over UNF Friday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (4-11, 1-4 ASUN) won by scores of 25-23, 32-34, 25-21, 25-23 to earn their first conference win of the season.  The Ospreys (7-12) fell to 1-4 in league play.

"Overall, our consistency was good, and that's what we have been working on," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said. "At the time we needed to bring our game, we were able to focus and bring energy ... It was a really good team effort."

The teams battled through 45 ties and 22 lead changes throughout the four sets.  The second set alone lasted 40 minutes as the teams went deep into extra points.  UNF staved off seven set points before eventually taking the set 34-32.

"I love those tight games because you learn so much from those situations," Deng said.

Stetson, which has struggled in the second half of matches this year, bounced back with a 25-21 win in Set 3 and a 25-23 victory in Set 4. It was the Hatters' first Set 4 win of the season.

Deisa added 17 digs to her 21-kill effort for her eighth double-double of the year.  Riley Nieporte (11 kills) and Elena Djokovic (nine kills) combined for 20 more kills on the outside.

The Hatters also got a ton of production from their middles.  Freshman Kaylee Oscarson recorded a season-high 14 kills and a .542 attack percentage, while senior Brianna Schmid tied a career-high with nine blocks.  Stetson collected 15 blocks as a team.

Emily DeStaffino registered her third straight double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs.  Also collecting double-digit dig totals were Chelcie Spence (15) and Alejandra Perez (12).

Solimar Cestero led the Ospreys with 27 kills.

Stetson outhit UNF .253 to .227. The match lasted 2 hours and 30 minutes.

The Hatters will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty at 1 p.m. Sunday.  The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
