Hatters Win Fifth Straight, Sweep North Alabama

Emily DeStaffino Records Career Assist No. 1000

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson won its fifth match in a row with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-18) victory over North Alabama Saturday night at the Edmunds Center.

Emily DeStaffino recorded her 1000th career assist as the Hatters (7-11, 4-4) completed a weekend sweep.  The Lions fell to 3-18, 1-7.

After starting 0-4 in conference play, the Hatters have climbed to fifth place in the league standings and hit the halfway point of the regular season with a 4-4 mark.  Stetson's five-game win streak is the team's longest since 2014.

"It feels awesome," said Riley Nieporte, who led the Hatters with 13 kills Saturday.  "We are finally learning how to connect really well together, on and off the court.  We are hanging out a lot more.  Just the energy and the vibe is totally different.  It's really positive, and it's awesome."

DeStaffino became the 12th player in school history to hit the 1000-assist mark. She finished with 45 assists and helped Stetson hit over .400 (.413) for the second day in a row.

"We are picking up the tempo of the game overall," Nieporte said.  "No matter who is on the other side, we try to keep our pace fast and consistent, and our communication. We are working on the speed, and it's going really well."

Freshman Kaylee Oscarson had another monster night, connecting for 12 kills on 16 swings without committing an error (.750).  She is hitting .767 in her past three matches (33-0-43).

Brianna Schmid added nine kills and hit .615.  Chelcie Spence (12) and Alejandra Perez (11) combined for 23 digs.

Eva Deisa added three aces to her team-high total of 27. Stetson never trailed after a brief 1-0 deficit to start the match.

The Hatters will begin the second half of ASUN play and go for their sixth win in a row Friday night at North Florida. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
