Hatters Sweep Jacksonville for Eighth Straight Win

Stetson hits .426 for match

DeLand, Fla. -- At home, on the road, or down the road, it doesn't seem to matter lately where the Hatters play.

Stetson turned in another masterful performance in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19) sweep of Jacksonville Wednesday night at the DeLand High School Gymnasium.

The Hatters (10-11, 7-4 ASUN) set a single-season school record with their eighth win in a row and moved into a tie for fourth place in the ASUN standings.

"I think we played really clean, great volleyball," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "I told them that having confidence and staying poised all the way through the game is very important to us.  This is some kind of great volleyball I have been looking for, and I am very proud of how they all performed."

With the Edmunds Center still closed from the Oct. 22 fire, Wednesday's match was held at DeLand High School. The change in venue did not slow down the Hatters, who hit .426 for the match and had three players in double figures in kills.

"We are connecting really well right now," senior Brianna Schmid said.  "We feel really good."

Schmid helped lead the offense with 10 kills, no errors, and a .769 attack percentage.  Fellow middle Kaylee Oscarson also hit .700 (7-0-10) on the night.

"Emily did a great job of distributing the ball, and to have both middles hitting over .700 without an error is awesome," Deng said.

Elena Djokovic led the team with 13 kills while Eva Deisa added 11.  Emily DeStaffino dished out 41 assists while Chelcie Spence picked up 11 digs. Stetson also served seven aces in the match, including the game-winner from Schmid.

Mallory Mattingly had 15 kills to lead the Dolphins (7-18, 3-8).

After going 2-10 in August and September, the Hatters finish the month of October with an 8-1 mark.  The one loss came on Oct. 5 to FGCU, a team Stetson will face again on Friday night in Fort Myers.  The Eagles are in first place and have won 12 in row.

Notes: The Hatters wore their primary black uniforms for the match but still donned the green throwback jerseys for warmups ... It was Stetson's first match at DeLand High since 1999 ... Stetson has topped the .400 mark in attack pct three times in the past five matches ... Eva Deisa became the first Hatter since Madison Akins in 2014 to record 30 aces in a season.
