Hatters Power Past Bethune-Cookman 3-0

Stetson Serves Season-High 14 Aces

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson recorded a season-high 14 aces and cruised to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Bethune-Cookman Sunday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (3-11) won by scores of 25-14, 25-13, and 25-9 to improve to 59-6 all-time vs. the Wildcats (5-12).

Naina Ivanova served a career-high eight aces on the night, including four in the second set alone.  She is the first Hatter since Rachel Miller in 2004 (10) to record eight or more aces in a match.

"Being a consistently good server is tough," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "Serving is the only skill where you have total control by yourself, but it probably the hardest skill to be consistently good. As the game goes on, you can lose focus or anything can happen. They did a really good job serving tonight for sure."

Brianna Schmid collected four aces while Eva Deisa and Alejandra Perez each added one.  The 14 team aces is the most by the Hatters since recorded 14 vs. Savannah State in 2011.

Stetson pulled away in a tight opening frame with a 9-0 run to end the set.  The Hatters then jumped out to 9-1 lead in the second set for a combined 18-1 run.  Stetson kept the foot on the gas in taking the third set 25-9.

"We showed great improvement in our focus.  It was a great learning lesson for us," Deng said.  "The focus was lacking a little bit at the beginning of the first set, but they responded really well."

Deisa led the offense with 15 kills and a .467 attack percentage.  Riley Nieporte tied a career-high with 13 kills while hitting .440.

Emily DeStaffino recorded her second straight double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs.  Chelcie Spence also had 10 digs as the Hatters collected seven blocks as a team.

Stetson outhit Bethune-Cookman .333 to .077.

The Hatters will host North Florida at 6 p.m. Friday.
