Hatters Fall to Kennesaw State on Senior Day

DeLand, Fla. – Quin Sutphin led the Owls with 17 kills as Kennesaw State defeated Stetson 3-0 on Senior Day Sunday at the Edmunds Center.

The loss was just the second for the Hatters (10-13, 7-6 ASUN) in the past 10 matches and halted Stetson's five-game home win streak.

The Owls won by scores of 25-21, 25-22, 25-19 to improve to 18-8 overall and 11-3 in ASUN play, good for second place in the league standings.

"I think overall we played well, but Kennesaw is on a run where they are playing really, really well," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "So when you play a good team that is passing well with quick transitions, your margin for error is very small.  We would close the gap a little bit, then make a serving error or let them side out.  I still see individual players improving during the match, which is really good to see, but against a good team like Kennesaw, you can't have too many errors."

Although the scores were tight in all three sets, the Hatters were playing catch-up for most of the match.

"We have been practicing on quicker transitions (from defense to offense), but we still didn't get it done," Deng said.  "Other than for a few plays, I felt like we were goose-chasing most of the time."

Riley Nieporte and Elena Djokovic tallied seven kills apiece to lead the Hatters.  Emily DeStaffino recorded 20 assists and four blocks, and Chelcie Spence picked up nine digs.

Kennesaw State outhit Stetson .349 to .228.

The Hatters honored seniors Brianna Schmid, Eva Deisa and DeStaffino prior to the match.  All three have earned ASUN Player of the Week honors this season.

Stetson remains one win shy of clinching a spot in the ASUN tournament.  The Hatters will host Liberty at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the final home match of the season.
