Hatters Fall in Straight Sets to Liberty

Two regular season matches remain

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson volleyball team dropped its home finale 3-0 to Liberty Tuesday night at the Edmunds Center.

The Flames (18-9, 11-4) won by scores of 26-24, 25-23, 25-13 to earn a split in the season series with the Hatters (10-14, 7-7).

Stetson missed a second straight opportunity to clinch a berth in the ASUN tournament but will have two more chances on the road this weekend.

"The big parts of the game we are doing well, but the little things are killing us right now," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "The easy free ball we can't convert, and we've been practicing on that.  It's just a lot of little things that results in losing slowly.  We need to get back to taking care of things we are supposed to take of."

Stetson staved off three set points late in the first set to pull even at 24, but Liberty tallied the final two points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  The second set was a seesaw affair until the Flames took advantage of a late serving point to win by two.  Liberty hit .471 in the third set to secure the win.

For the Hatters, Riley Nieporte, Kaylee Oscarson and Elena Djokovic each had eight kills to lead the offense.  Emily DeStaffino tallied 30 assists.  Chelcie Spence (14 digs) and Naina Ivanova (13 digs) led the defensive effort.  Stetson collected five solo blocks, including three by Oscarson.

Casey Goodwin had 18 kills to lead Liberty.

The Hatters will look to punch their ticket to the ASUN tournament when they visit North Alabama at 8 p.m. ET Friday night.
