Iona Rallies Past Hatters

Stetson placed four players in double figures but the Hatters didn't have enough down the stretch in a 60-55 loss to Iona in the ASUN/MAAC Challenge, Friday at HP Field House at ESPN's Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Jahlil Rawley and Christiaan Jones each scored 11 points, while Rob Perry and Kenny Aninye tossed in 10 apiece for the Hatters (2-3).

After a sluggish first half for both teams, the Hatters came out strong to start the second half, sinking 6 of their first 9 shots and building a 39-31 lead with 13:58 to play.

Iona (1-2), which has played in each of the last four NCAA Tournaments, slowly chipped away at the lead to get back in the game, though a Rawley 3-pointer with 10:52 to play gave Stetson a 46-39 advantage.

The Gaels responded to that basket with an 11-0 run over the next 6:36, taking control of the game after an E.J. Crawford basket made it 50-46 with 4:16 to go.

Stetson was down but not out. The Hatters twice cut the lead down to two points in the final minutes, the last time when a Perry triple made it 53-51 with 2:39 left.

But that was a close as the Hatters got the rest of the way as Iona held on for the win.

The Hatters shot just 40 percent for the game, with Iona fairing not much better at 41 percent. The Gaels owned a decided advantage at the free throw line, making 14 of 27 from the stripe compared to just 8 of 12 for the Hatters. Iona also out-rebounded the Hatters, 38-31.

Tajuan Agee led Iona with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hatters next face Monmouth, 8:30 p.m., Saturday, in the final game of the ASUN/MAAC Challenge.

Quoting Coach Jones
"I thought we had a chance. We've just got to learn how to finish. We were playing against an NCAA Tournament team, a team that knows how to win. We just didn't make the big plays down the stretch that we've got to make to able to win."
