Defense, Clutch Plays Lead Hatters Past Monmouth

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.--Freshmen Rob Perry and Mahamadou Diawara combined for 41 points as Stetson outlasted Monmouth, 63-55, in the ASUN/MAAC Challenge, Saturday at HP Field House.

Perry scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half when Stetson bolted to a 31-14 lead at halftime. Diawara, who scored a season-high 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting, scored eight consecutive points during one critical stretch late in the second half as Monmouth (2-5) was making a charge.

Stetson (3-3) survived a late three-point barrage by the Hawks as Monmouth made four triples in the final six minutes of play.

The Hatters dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Hawks by a 42-21 margin. Stetson also limited Monmouth to 39 percent shooting for the game, including 22 percent in the first half.

Stetson, meanwhile, shot 49 percent for the game. Perry and Wheza Panzo each grabbed 9 rebounds, while Diawara added 7.

Turning Point
After a sluggish start for both teams Stetson used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to gain control of the game, turning an 8-8 affair into a 17-8 Stetson lead with 6:19 left in the half. But the Hatters didn't stop there, Perry scored 10 points in the final 4:47 to give the Hatters a 31-14 lead at halftime.

Unsung Heroes
Whez Panzo, Jahlil Rawley and Terry Ivery gave the Hatters a lift at various moments of the game. Panzo enjoyed his best effort in a Stetson uniform with 6 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists while Rawley led Stetson's defensive effort with 3 steals. Ivery was key during the first half on both ends of the floor, and made a pair of clutch free throws with six seconds to play.

Up Next
The Hatters have a quick turnaround as they return to Edmunds Center for a 2 p.m., Sunday contest with Western Carolina.
