Hatters Come Up Short Against Western Carolina

DeLAND--Playing their third game in less than 48 hours, Stetson men's basketball simply ran out of gas down the stretch in a 70-64 loss to Western Carolina, Sunday at Edmunds Center.

Rob Perry led the Hatters (3-4) with 15 points, but after limiting the Catamounts (4-2) to just 23 points in the first half, Western Carolina exploded for 47 more after halftime.

Western's Mason Faulkner led all scorers with 24 points (5-16 FG) largely due to an 11 of 12 shooting effort at the free throw line.

The Catamounts caught fire form 3-point range in the second half, making 8 of 15 shots from beyond the arc. A weary Stetson squad was just 4 of 16 from deep for the game.

Wheza Panzo (11) and Kenny Aninye (10) also scored in double figures for the Hatters.

Turning Point, Part I
Stetson was on the verge of letting the game get away early, falling into a 12-2 hole to start out. But the Hatters ripped off a 12-0 run and led 14-12 on a fast-break layup by Wheza Panzo with 8:49 left before halftime. The lead see-sawed back-and-forth before Joel Kabimba's layup with one second left gave Stetson a 24-23 lead at the break.

Turning Point, Part II
The Catamounts came out of the locker room firing to start the second half. Their first eight field goals of the second half came from beyond the arc and the allowed WCU to grab a 46-39 lead with 12:43 to go.

Never Give Up
Despite Western's hot shooting from deep, the Hatters never quit. With Catamounts holding a 66-55 lead with 3:16 to play, the Hatters using a full court press and come opportunistic offense t cut the deficit down to 67-64 on a layup by Kenny Aninye with 46 seconds left but that was as close as they would get.

Quoting Coach Jones
"Our guys never quit. We played three games in less than 48 hours. We're asking a lot of our freshmen, and this is all new to them. I thought they gave us all they had tonight. Obviously, the game came down to some plays down the stretch that we didn't get. That's kind of been the calling card for our experience right now. We're looking for some veterans to step up, and we're not getting enough of that right now. The good news is we have a chance to come back home on Tuesday and play."

Of Note…
•    Rob Perry has reached double figures in 6 straight games. It's the longest such streak by a Hatter since 2017-18 (Divine Myles).
•    In the first half, Jahlil Rawley hit his 5th three-pointer of the season. Last season he made just one.
•    Wheza Panzo set a new career high in points with 11
•    Kenny Aninye finished the game with 10 points, his second game this season with at least 10
•    Stetson has limited its opponents to 70 points or fewer in each of the last three games

Up Next
The Hatters get to rest (sort of) for a whole day before they host Florida College, 7 p.m., Tuesday at Edmunds Center.
