Diawara's Double-Double Leads Hatters Past Florida College

Freshman Mahamadou Diawara recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Stetson to a 72-60 victory over Florida College, Tuesday at Edmunds Center.

The 6-foot-10 Diawara overmatched the Falcons, going 9 of 13 from the field and finishing with 3 blocked shots in addition to his scoring and rebounding totals. Diawara was joined in double figures by Rob Perry with a game-high 24 and Jalen Crutchfield with 11.

Playing their fourth game in five days, the Hatters (4-4) had to work a little harder than expected to get this one. Stetson actually trailed at halftime, 34-33, after the Falcons limited the Hatters to 37.1 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

But Diawara and the Hatters took control of the game early in the second half, starting the final period with a 13-2 run as Stetson opened up a 46-38 lead with 15:05 to play.

While Florida College never really went away, the Hatters were never seriously threatened again. A Crutchfield layup with 9:13 remaining gave the Hatters a 60-48 lead, and Stetson's lead reached 12 points three more times before the final horn.

Big Mo
Mahamadou Diawara matched his career-high with 21 points, and established a new career mark (albeit in 8 career games) with three blocked shots. The freshman came into the game leading the ASUN Conference in field-goal percentage at .673, and his 9 of 13 effort raised that number slightly (.677). In case you're interested, the Stetson record for field-goal percentage in a season is .648 set by Clifford Johnson during the 1979-80 season.

Where's Wheza?
Creating plays on both ends of the floor, that's where. While Wheza Panzo finished with just four points on Tuesday, his impact was felt all over the court as he added 7 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Of Note…
  • Rob Perry reached double figures for the 7th straight game
  • Mahamadou Diawara and Perry had 18 of the Hatters first 25 points
  • Jalen Crutchfield's 11 points are a season-high
  • Jahlil Rawley was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line
  • The Hatters scored 15 points off 14 Falcons turnovers
  • The Hatters shot 46.7% from the field in the second half vs. just 37.1% in the first half
