Hatters Visit Western Illinois on Saturday

Stetson men's basketball opens the road portion of its schedule on Saturday when the Hatters visit Macomb, Ill., for a clash with Western Illinois. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST.

The Hatters (1-0) opened the new season and the Donnie Jones Era with an 84-26 win over Trinity Baptist on Tuesday at Edmunds Center. Junior Christiaan Jones scored a career-high 23 points, and freshman Mahamadou Diawara scored 10 points as the Hatters limited the Eagles to 14.5 percent shooting.

While Jones and Diawara were the only Hatters to reach double-digits in points, 12 of the 13 players who saw game action scored.

Western Illinois (0-1) also opened the season on Tuesday and suffered a decidedly different result. The Leathernecks dropped a 98-65 decision at Indiana, as junior guard Kobe Webster scored a team-high 18 points.

News & Notes
•Stetson limited Trinity Baptist to 14.5 percent shooting from the field, the lowest for a Stetson opponent since Flagler shot 25.8 percent on Nov. 19, 2004. The 14.5-percent mark is believed to be the lowest in the program's modern history (post-World War II). The NCAA record for lowest single-game field-goal percentage is 13.3 percent by Dayton against Miami (Ohio), on Dec. 29, 2001.
•The 58-point margin of victory was the largest for the Hatters during the program's modern (post-World War II) era. Stetson has sponsored basketball since 1900.
•Trinity's 26 points were the fewest by a Stetson opponent since Tampa also scored 26 points against the Hatters on Feb. 8, 1946 (W, 47-26)
•The Hatters tied a school record with 11 blocked shots. The original mark was set against Samford on Feb. 28, 1991. Four different Hatters blocked at least 2 shots.
•Tuesday's game also marked the debut of head coach Donnie Jones, who is the program's 22nd head coach
•Junior Christiaan Jones set or tied career highs for points (23), field-goals made (9), steals (5) and blocked shots (2)
•Western Illinois is a member of the The Summit League. WIU is a founding member of what was formerly known as the Mid-Continent Conference before it became the Summit League in the summer of 2007.
•Stetson is 4-10 all-time against current Summit members. This is the sixth consecutive season in which Stetson has faced a Summit League foe. Stetson will square off with Purdue-Fort Wayne (0-4) for the fifth time in six seasons next weekend, and the Hatters have also faced North Dakota State (0-1) during that span.
•The Summit League also includes Denver (0-1), North Dakota, Omaha, Oral Roberts (4-4), South Dakota, and South Dakota State.
•The Hatters are looking to snap a 16-game winless streak on the road. Stetson was 0-16 away from home in 2018-19. The last road win for the Hatters was an 84-80 victory at NJIT on Feb. 10, 2018.
