Hatters Visit VMI on Saturday

Stetson men's basketball heads back out on the road this weekend when the Hatters face VMI, 1 p.m., Saturday, in Lexington, Va.

The Hatters (5-5) will be playing their seventh game away from home on Saturday. Stetson is 2-4 in games played away from Edmunds Center so far this season.

Stetson enters Saturday's game following a 72-67 win over county rival Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday. Freshman Mahamadou Diawara led the way with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Christiaan Jones came off the bench with 16 points and 6 boards.

VMI (3-7) suffered a 71-58 loss at Duquesne on Wednesday. Freshman Travis Evee led the Keydets with 26 points.

What You Need to Know
•After a quick visit home, the Hatters return to the road when they visit VMI on Saturday. This will be Stetson's first-ever trip to Lexington, Va.
•Saturday's game will be the fourth meeting all-time between the Keydets and Hatters. Stetson and VMI first met in 1969 at the Gold Coast Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla., then again at the Tangerine Bowl Tournament in Winter Park, Fla., in 1979. After 40 years the series resumed last season in DeLand with VMI getting an overtime win. Stetson leads the series, 2-1.
•Saturday's game will be a homecoming of sorts for Stetson freshman Joel Kabimba. He spent two seasons at Middleburg Academy in Virginia, some 150 miles from VMI.

Under the Hat
•Mahamadou Diawara recorded his third straight double-double on Tuesday with 22 points and 10 rebounds against Bethune-Cookman. He is the first Hatter since Brian Pegg in '15-16 to have three straight double dips (Pegg had 5 in a row).
•Over the last three games Stetson freshman Mahamadou Diawara has been on a tear, averaging 19 points and 10.7 rebounds per game while shooting 59 percent from the field. For the season, Diawara is averaging 14 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
•Rob Perry scored 34 points against Western Illinois on Nov. 9, the most by a Stetson freshman since 1983. He earned ASUN Newcomer of the Week honors for his performance.
•Junior Christiaan Jones is beginning to show signs of breaking out of his early-season slump. The guard is averaging 15.5 points over his last two games, and his 16 points and 6 rebounds off the bench on Tuesday were a key factor in Stetson's defeat of Bethune-Cookman.
•Through games of Dec. 4, Stetson freshman Mahamadou Diawara is 19th nationally in field-goal percentage (.636). He is also 42nd in offensive rebounds per game (3.4).
•After Tuesday's win, Stetson head coach Donnie Jones is now 7-0 all-time against Bethune-Cookman
