Hatters Take Two at FGCU

Carly Perales wins Career Match No. 60

Estero, Fla. -- The 10th-ranked Stetson beach volleyball team defeated FGCU twice by identical 4-1 scores Wednesday afternoon in the ASUN opener at Estero Community Park.

The Hatters (16-4, 2-0 ASUN) improved to 11-1 in their last 12 contests and have won 28 straight matches against ASUN opponents.

Wednesday's double dual featured six matches that went the full three sets.  The Hatters were victorious in four of the six.

In the first dual, Stetson got on the board first when Quinci Birker and Rebecca Ingram won 21-13, 21-17 at the 5 seed.  Samantha Harris and Julie Varga followed with a come-from-behind 13-21, 21-19, 15-11 win at the 4 seed to put Stetson ahead 2-0.

The Hatters clinched the match at the 2 seed when ASUN Pair of the Week Darby Dunn and Sammee Thomas won 21-13, 21-14.  

The Eagles (7-7, 0-2) got their lone point at the 3 seed by way of a 21-11, 19-21, 19-17 three-set victory.  Stetson locked in its final point at the 1 seed with a 21-14, 21-12 win by Carly Perales and Sunniva Helland-Hansen.

In the second dual, four of the five matches went the distance, including the first two matches at the 4 and 5 seeds.  FGCU tallied the first point at the 4 seed with a 21-16, 21-23, 15-13 win to take a 1-0 lead.  Birker and Ingram tied the match with a 21-18, 25-27, 15-8 win at the 5 seed.  

With the second wave on the court, Ana Costa and Rachel Noble gave the Hatters a 2-1 lead with a 21-12, 21-16 win at the 3 seed.  At the 1 seed, Helland-Hansen and Perales rallied for a 19-21, 21-19, 15-6 victory.  Dunn and Thomas completed the dual with a 25-23, 19-21, 15-8 win at the 2 seed.

The Hatters will travel to the FIU Surf and Turf this weekend in Miami Beach.  Stetson will face No. 8 FIU, No. 4 LSU and No. 1 UCLA on Friday, and No. 20 TCU and Tulane on Saturday.
