Tallahassee, Fla. – The Stetson baseball team will close out the month of April with six consecutive road games, starting Tuesday night in Tallahassee against Florida State.
The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start and will be broadcast on the ACC Extra Network (ESPN+). The Hatters and Seminoles will square off again on Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
Stetson (18-20) is coming off a home series victory over Kennesaw State, but missed out on getting a sweep of the Owls with a 2-1 loss in the series finale on Saturday. A win in that game would have evened the Hatters' season record for the first time all year.
Florida State (24-14) is also coming off a series win, taking a pair of games on the road at Virginia. Like Stetson, the Seminoles dropped the series finale, preventing a sweep. FSU has won six of its last eight games overall and, with the two games against the Hatters, is opening a nine-game home-stand.
Stetson sophomore
Eric Foggo was the talk of the town after hitting for the cycle in the series opener against KSU. It was the first time in at least 50 years (back to when no game records exist) that a Stetson player has pulled off the trick. Foggo pulled off the feat in reverse order, blasting a three-run game-tying homer in the second inning, following with a two-run triple in the third before picking up the double in the fifth and single in the seventh.
Foggo came with one hit of the cycle twice during the 2018 season. He failed to have a double against NJIT on April 20 and didn't get the triple against USC Upstate on May 17.
For his performance in the series against KSU, Foggo was named co-Player of the Week by the ASUN. It is the first time he has won that honor and is the second for Stetson this year. For the series against KSU Foggo had six hits in nine at bats, had a pair of walks, drove in six runs and scored three. He has hit safely in seven straight games (10-for-20) with two doubles, two home runs and nine RBI over that stretch.
Sophomore
Chris Gonzalez gave another strong outing in the series opener against KSU. After allowing three runs in the first inning, just two earned, he blanked the Owls over the next seven innings to improve to 6-0 on the year, 3-0 in ASUN play. Combined, Stetson's starting pitchers allowed just three earned runs over 20.1 innings of work in the series against KSU.
Bret Neilan, who closed out the final 1.1 innings against KSU on Sunday will make his fifth start of the season on Tuesday in Tallahassee. In his four previous starts this year Neilan has worked a total of 20 innings, allowing 19 runs on 28 hits with nine walks and two hit batters. In his 11 relief appearances this year he has allowed a total of seven runs on 18 hits over 20.2 innings of work with 12 walks and 14 strikeouts.
FSU owns a 65-24 overall series lead over Stetson, including a 40-11 mark in Tallahassee. The last time Stetson won against the Seminoles in their home park was 2011, a 6-4 victory in 11 innings. Last year FSU took 4-0 and 18-10 victories in the two games played in Tallahassee.
Hatters coach
Steve Trimper is 1-9 in his career against FSU.
The last time Stetson faced FSU was April 24 of last season. The Hatters took a 5-3 win over the Seminoles that afternoon at Melching Field, launching Stetson on a school record 18-game win streak that carried the team all the way to the Super Regionals. That win over FSU also snapped Stetson's 15-game losing streak to the Seminoles.
Sophomore Conor Grady recorded the final five outs of that game last year and will make just his third start of the season for FSU on Tuesday. Grady was named ACC pitcher of the Week last week after allowing just one unearned run over 12.1 innings of work against Florida and Clemson. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out 20 in those two games.
Neither team has settled on a starting pitcher for Wednesday's game.
The Hatters will continue north after the pair of games against FSU, opening a series at Lipscomb on Friday evening in Nashville, Tenn.
