Hatters Add Five for 2019-20

DeLand, Fla. – Stetson University women's basketball head coach Lynn Bria has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the program for the 2019-20 season.

The signing class includes: Emari Bell (Orlando, Fla./Central Michigan), Tonysha Curry (Louisville, Ky./Florida SouthWestern State), Savannah Day (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/TRC Academy), Shania Edgecombe (Jacksonville, Fla./Southern Miss), and Maria Visone (Naples, Italy/Costal Carolina).

Bell, a 6-3 forward, transfers to Stetson after one year at Central Michigan.  The Altamonte Springs native was a three-year letterwinner at Edgewater High School before completing her prep career at Jones High School. She led Edgewater to three straight district championships, two regional titles, and two appearances in the state semifinals. As a junior, she averaged 10.9 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game while serving as team captain.  She was also an all-metro and honorable mention all-area performer.

"Emari Bell is a true post player," Bria said.  "She is one of those rare players these days that loves to play with her back to the basket.  She has a great touch around the rim and can also step out and shoot some.  She also rebounds the ball really well.  Coming from a program like Central Michigan, she has played against some great competition every day.  She will add another dimension to our team."

Curry, a 5-10 guard, averaged 7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game as a sophomore this past season at Florida SouthWestern State.  She earned second team all-conference honors after helping lead the Bucs to a 30-4 season.  She shot 47 percent from the floor and averaged 22.5 minutes in 32 games played.  As a freshman, she played 26 games at the University of Richmond.

Curry was the Seventh Region Player of the Year and a Miss Kentucky basketball finalist at Manual High School in Louisville.  She averaged 11.3 points and 9.8 rebounds as a senior.

"Tonysha is a dynamic combo guard with really good size," Bria said.  "She has great court vision and is an outstanding rebounder.  We can play her in a variety of ways, either at the wing or we can slide her to the point.  I anticipate that she will make an impact for us right away."

Day, a 6-1 forward, comes to Stetson after two years at the TRC Academy in Ontario.  In high school, Day scored over 1000 points in three seasons at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School in Toronto.  She averaged over 20 points per game and helped lead her team to the Toronto Catholic District School Board championship in 2016.

"Savannah's skills are outstanding," Bria said.  "She can go inside/outside, and she can score in a variety of ways.  I really like her size.  She can help us at both the 3 and the 4."

Edgecombe, a 6-1 forward, played in 17 games as a freshman at Southern Miss this past season.  She registered 16 points and 16 rebounds and was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Edgecombe was a teammate of current Hatter Day'Neshia Banks at Jean Ribault High School in Jacksonville.  She helped lead the Trojans to two consecutive state championships, including a 6A title in 2017.  She was named FABC Second-Team All-State in 2016 and received a 3-star ranking from ESPN HoopGirlz.

"Shania is a very athletic forward who can play different positions," Bria said.  "We recruited her hard out of high school.  She has a great motor, she rebounds the ball, and she has the potential to be a really explosive player."

Visone, a 5-8 guard, transfers to Stetson after two seasons at Coastal Carolina.  As a sophomore she averaged 3.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 26 games, helping lead the Chanticleers to a berth in the WBI.  She also earned a spot on the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's List for having a GPA over 3.5.

"Maria is a highly-skilled point guard from Italy," Bria said.  "She can score, she can pass, she has incredible court vision, and she is deceptively quick.  She can shoot the 3 or take you off the bounce. I really like that she makes good decisions with the ball.  She is a well-rounded point guard."

Bell, Curry, Day, Edgecombe, and Visone join Stetson's fall signees Kimia Carter (Chattanooga, Tenn./Brainerd HS), Maddie Novak (Oxford, Mich./Detroit Country Day HS), Teneil Robertson (Chicago, Ill./Phillips Academy HS), and Jamiya Turner (Orlando, Fla./Jones HS).
