Freshmen Help Hatters Sweep Niagara In Season Opener

Boca Raton, Fla. -- Stetson freshman Elena Djokovic said she wasn't nervous at all heading into her first collegiate match.  The Serbia native played with confidence and delivered a strong performance in Stetson's commanding 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-16) win over Niagara Friday morning at FAU Arena.

Djokovic led the team with 12 kills and added 10 digs as the Hatters won their season opener for the second straight year.  Stetson will face tournament host Florida Atlantic Friday night in the second match of the FAU Invitational.

Djokovic was quick to praise her teammates after the game.

"They were really good, and our energy was good," she said.  "We were supportive and didn't have any let downs."

Freshman Kaylee Oscarson also made a splash in her collegiate debut, collecting nine kills without an error for a .643 attack percentage.  The 6-5 middle added a solo block and two block assists.

"I was surprised to see our freshmen doing really well," head coach Yang Deng said after the match.  "I think there can be a lot of stress when you play your first collegiate game.  It's a lot of pressure.  They were really excited in the locker room (before the game). They were focused on how to get the job done.  Overall, they did a very good job."

Stetson had a strong offensive game, hitting .410 in the first set and .349 overall.  Setter Emily DeStaffino dished out 35 assists while adding four kills of her own.  Riley Nieporte, playing in her hometown of Boca Raton, added 10 kills and a .500 attack percentage.

Brianna Schmid (7-1-12) also hit .500 on offense, while Eva Deisa added notched her 600th career kill and 100th career block.  Chelcie Spence netted 11 digs and two aces, while Naina Ivanova registered nine digs and a pair of aces.  Lindsey Leipold picked up two assists as the setter late in the third set.

Notes:
  • Stetson's .349 attack percentage is the second highest mark in Coach Deng's tenure (.410 vs. UNF last season)
  • It was the first ever meeting between Stetson and Niagara
  • The Hatters defeated Tennessee State 3-1 in last year's season opener
  • Saturday's match vs. Grambling State has been canceled
