Hatters Topple SEC Foe Mississippi State

Brianna Schmid hits .533 with three blocks

Jacksonville, Ala. -- For the first time since 1985, the Hatters have a win over an SEC opponent.

Riley Nieporte led the way with 12 kills and Brianna Schmid hit .533 as Stetson defeated previously undefeated Mississippi State (6-1) 3-2 Friday afternoon in the first match of the JSU Gamecock Classic.

Stetson improved to 2-3 on the season and will face Jacksonville State at 8 p.m. ET.

In their previous three contests, the Hatters won the opening set before eventually dropping in the match.  Stetson flipped the script against Mississippi State, rallying from a 1-0 deficit to win in five sets (19-25, 25-22, 25-15, 17-25, 15-10).

Nieporte hit .286 for the match to reach her season-high total in kills.  Schmid, meanwhile, did not commit an attack error in 15 attempts (8-0-15).  She also recorded three solo blocks.

"Bri played like a senior, hitting over .500 with no errors," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "Riley is getting more experience and swinging really well at the pin. Both of those (performances) were really good to see."

Elena Djokovic and Eva Deisa added nine kills apiece for the Hatters, who tied a season-high with 48 kills.  Emily DeStaffino dished out 29 assists, and Chelcie Spence picked up 16 digs.

Naina Ivanova netted the game-winning kill in the fifth set and tallied 10 digs.  Deisa also reached double-digit digs with 12 while adding a career-best four aces.

Stetson's last win over an SEC opponent also came against Mississippi State (3-2) on Nov. 2, 1985 in Starkville, Miss.

Tonight's match against Jacksonville State will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
