Hatters Fall in Four Sets to Indiana

Eva Deisa records third straight double-double

Tampa, Fla. -- Kamryn Malloy posted 12 kills and five blocks as Indiana defeated Stetson 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 25-11) Friday afternoon at the USF Classic.

The Hatters (2-6) battled the Hoosiers (9-2) down to the wire in each of the first three sets, but Indiana hit .378 in the final frame to pull away.

"Even though we lost, I told the girls I was pleased with their performance," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "We worked this week on being great with our consistency and being focused for a long period of time.  Today, I think it showed.  Winning a set against a very physical team like Indiana was good to see."

The Hoosiers are receiving votes in this week's AVCA Top 25 poll and were coming off a 3-2 win at No. 15 Kentucky.  Indiana's front row compiled 15 blocks in the match and helped limit Stetson's offensive production.

The opening set featured 14 ties and six lead changes before a late Indiana run proved to be the difference.  In set 2, the Hatters cut a five-point deficit down to two but would pull no closer.

In the third set, however, the Hatters took control early, using an 11-3 run to take a 16-9 lead.  The Hoosiers slowly chipped away, eventually pulling even at 21 before taking a 22-21 lead.  Kills by Brianna Schmid and Kaylee Oscarson put Stetson back in front, and after the teams traded side out points, Stetson took the set on a Hossiers' ball handling error.

Stetson hit .344 as a team in the frame.

"We played the way we were supposed to play," Deng said about the third set.  "Even though they came back, we still finished the set which was really good for us.  It was also a great learning experience.  It's not so much about the score but rather how consistent the performance is."

Eva Deisa led the Hatters with her third straight double-double. The Hatter senior registered a match-high 13 kills to go along with 14 digs.  Elena Djokovic netted nine kills and Schmid added eight kills and four blocks.

Chelcie Spence picked up 18 digs in the match, bringing her career total to 997.  Emily DeStaffino dished out 35 assists.

The tournament continues Saturday when the Hatters face USF at 7 p.m.
