Kaley Melville Named Beach Volleyball Assistant Coach

DeLand, Fla. -- Former Stetson University beach and indoor volleyball standout and current pro beach player Kaley Melville returns to her alma mater as an assistant coach, head coach Kristina Hernandez announced on Monday.

"I am so excited to add Mel to our staff," Hernandez said.  "Having an alumna come back to our program has always been my goal. Mel not only has great passion and investment in our program, but she also has been a part of Stetson and will really be able to relate to our players and their experiences playing here. In addition, she's a great technical coach and has learned a lot in her time playing after college. It will be an easy transition, and I'm excited for her to start with us."

"I am excited to be back and to be helping the players continue to build the legacy that has become Stetson Beach Volleyball," Melville said.  "I am grateful that Coach Hernandez and the athletic department were willing to accommodate my own professional beach career and allow me to continue to chase my own dreams as I help the girls chase theirs.  The lessons I have learned and the experiences I gained during my eight seasons of collegiate athletics make me proud to be a Hatter, and I am ready to give Stetson everything it gave to me and more."

As a pro beach player, Melville has competed in several international tournaments representing Team USA, including a semifinal appearance at the Norceca Continental Playoffs in Managua, Nicaragua and a quarterfinal appearance at FIVB 1-Star event in Tuan Chau, Vietnam.

Melville has also garnered a slew of accolades on the professional circuit in the United States. She has earned multiple championship titles in the AVP Next, EVP, GAV, Sandbox, TVA Big Money, Excel, NVL Rize, and Dig the Beach Series professional tours.  She placed second overall at the Atlantic City Big Shot East Coast Championship in 2016, and had final four appearances at the World Series of Beach Volleyball in 2017 and the Motherlode Championship in 2019.  She was named the NVL's Most Improved Player in 2016 and has been ranked in the Top 50 nationally in the U26 rankings.

A member of the inaugural Stetson beach team in 2012, Melville put together a decorated four-year career in the sand.  She twice earned first team all-conference honors including ASUN Pair of the Year and ASUN Pair of the Tournament accolades in 2015.  She went a perfect 12-0 against ASUN competition as a senior and helped Stetson defeat Georgia State in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Championship.  She also competed in the AVCA Collegiate Pairs Championship in 2012, 2014, and 2015.

In addition, Melville had a standout four-year career with the Stetson indoor volleyball team.  She led the team in kills every season, and finished her career second in school history in kills (1,282) and third in digs (1,203).  As a senior, she earned all-conference honors and helped Stetson qualify for the ASUN Championship for the first time in 18 seasons.  She was the department's female recipient of the Distinguished Senior Award.

A native of New Germany, Minn., Melville was named MVP and an All-American at the AAU National Championships in 2009. She graduated from Stetson in 2014 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Studies.  She then earned a Master's Degree in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from Stetson in 2017.   She is looking to become a licensed therapist and plans to begin work on a PhD.
