Lipscomb Outlasts Hatters in Five-Set Marathon

Chelcie Spence Sets School Digs Record

DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson had several opportunities to win their home opener, but Lipscomb prevailed 3-2 Friday night in an ASUN matchup at the Edmunds Center.

The Hatters (2-9, 0-2 ASUN) led 1-0 and 2-1 in the match and 12-5 in the fourth set before the Bisons (5-7, 1-0) rallied to force a fifth set.

In the decisive frame, Stetson battled back from a 4-1 deficit to take an 8-7 lead at the changeover.  Lipscomb then answered with a 5-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way.

"Overall, I think we performed better than we have all season," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "We just have to continue to know how to capitalize, and how to have a sense of urgency all the time.  We tend to play up-and-down depending on the situation.  As a young group still trying to find their confidence, I think it is an important lesson for us to learn.  Now we have to take the experience and move on."

Stetson libero Chelcie Spence had a record-breaking night on defense, setting a new school rally-scoring-era record with 36 digs.  As a team, Stetson picked up a season-high 95 digs, including 15 from Eva Deisa and 12 from Alejandra Perez.

Elena Djokovic registered 17 kills for the second straight match to lead the offense, while Emily DeStaffino (46A, 10D) and Deisa (13K, 15D) each recorded double-doubles.  Riley Nieporte added 12 kills to the Hatters' attack.

Kaylee Oscarson led the front row with six blocks.

The Hatters outhit the Bisons .225 to .202, but Lipscomb held a 71-54 advantage in kills.  The time of the match was two hours and 37 minutes.

Stetson will visit Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. Sunday in a match broadcast live on ESPN+.
