Hatters Fall Short in Five-Set Marathon

Miami, Fla. -- Laura Masciullo recorded a game-high 26 kills as Hofstra outlasted Stetson 3-2 Saturday morning to conclude the FIU Panther Fest.

The Hatters (1-3) won the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores, but the Pride (3-3) rallied with 25-18, 25-18, and 15-10 victories to win the two-hour, 18-minute match.

Stetson has won the first set in all four contests this season.

"We always come out strong, but we have to figure out how to consistently sustain that level of play needed to win," Stetson head coach Yang Deng said.  "That is a challenge for us, but considering we had not practiced for a week, overall it wasn't bad.  It shows us how good we can be.  If we can come out and play strong, that is good, but the consistency is not there yet.  We still have a lot of work to do."

Senior Brianna Schmid led the Hatters with a career-high 13 kills while posting a .379 attack percentage.  She also collected seven blocks including four in the first set alone.

Elena Djokovic added 11 kills and four blocks.

Three Hatters posted double-digit dig totals.  Eva Deisa tallied 14 digs, Naina Ivanova picked up 12, and Chelcie Spence recorded 10.  Emily DeStaffino netted 31 assists and three blocks.

Hofstra posted 75 kills for the match and hit .225 as a team.  Stetson recorded just 42 kills but held an 11-2 advantage in blocks.

The Hatters will return to action next weekend at the Jacksonville State Gamecock Classic.
