Hatters Drop Season Opener at USF

TAMPA, Fla.--Stetson women's tennis opened its spring season with a 5-2 loss at USF on Monday.

Playing their first match of the year as a full team, the Hatters played the Bulls close in both doubles and singles but came up just short.

"We worked hard today," Stetson head coach Travis Sandlant said. "The doubles was critical. It was tough and very close. We played well. We just didn't covert some break opportunities,"

USF earned the doubles point, winning at No. 2 (6-2) and No. 1 (7-5).

Leading 1-0 in the match, the Bulls earned wins on Courts 2, 3 and 1 to clinch the match, winning in straight sets each time.

Stetson got on the board when freshman Noa Cohen earned a straight set victory on Court 4, winning 6-3, 6-2. Fellow freshman Laia Pasini followed suit on Court 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 win before USF closed out the match with a win on Court 5.

"The freshman really stepped up in singles and got through their first matches with a win, which was good to see at this level," Sandlant said.

Stetson returns to action with a split doubleheader on Saturday, as the Hatters visit Embry-Riddle at 11 a.m., and host Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m.
