Hatters Fall at UNF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--Four different players scored in double figures for Stetson but it wasn't enough as North Florida handed the Hatters a 78-65 setback in ASUN Conference play, Thursday at UNF Arena.

Rob Perry (14), Christiaan Jones (13), Mahamadou Diawara (12) and Wheza Panzo (10) all reached double digits for Stetson (11-12 overall, 5-3 ASUN) but the Hatters couldn't overcome 15 3-poiners by the Ospreys (13-10, 6-2).

In a game between two of the ASUN's three co-leaders, a freshman-dominated Stetson squad made life difficult for the senior-laden Ospreys on their home court.

UNF led wire-to-wire but never had a lead that seemed to last for very long until the game's final minutes.

The Ospreys appeared to be on the verge of running away late in the first half but Stetson rallied before the break. Down 38-24, the Hatters closed the first half on an 8-0 run and closed the gap to 38-32 at halftime.

Stetson opened the second half with the first four points to get within 38-36, and after a quick burst by UNF, the Hatters cut the deficit to 42-39 on a Perry 3-pointer.

After UNF pushed the lead to 53-42, the Hatters went on a 6-0 burst to get within 53-48.

The Ospreys kept trying to run away and the Hatters kept giving chase, as a Jahlil Rawley jumper cut the lead down to 58-55 with 9:24 to play. But Stetson never got any closer the rest of the way.

Garrett Sams led UNF with 24 points, going 6 of 9 from beyond the arc as the Ospreys attempted an incredible 38 3-pointers for the game.

Perry finished with 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. Kenny Aninye had seven rebounds while Diawara and Panzo each grabbed six boards to help Stetson to a 43-38 advantage on the glass.

Game Notes
  • Thursday's loss snapped Stetson's four-game winning streak overall, and their string of four straight wins on the road. Both were the longest such streaks in seven years.
  • Rob Perry extended his double-digit scoring streak to 9 games while Diawara's double-figure run reached 4 games
  • Wheza Panzo's 10 points were one off his career high
